It’s been a big and exciting first day for our team here in Japan!
We arrived at Hayama Sailing Club, located at the beautiful Hayama Marina—a venue proudly used during the Tokyo Olympics. Our sailors received their charter boats and headed out for a practice race on the regatta course.
The conditions were tough, with a 15-knot breeze, sweltering 34°C heat, and high humidity—a true test for any sailor. We’re incredibly proud of how quickly our team adapted.
After practice, we joined the opening ceremony, where JJYU and Hayama Sailing Club managers warmly welcomed all teams and shared the club’s rich history.
The New Zealand sailors were warmly welcomed, and Mat Dunne spoke on behalf of Team NZL, expressing our gratitude for the opportunity to participate in this special regatta. He shared how meaningful it is for our sailors to be able to sail in such a unique setting—right in front of Mount Fuji, a truly unforgettable backdrop.
We then took part in a cultural exchange session, where the Japanese sailors surprised everyone with thoughtful gifts for all the international teams. In return, our custom boat stickers and Whittaker’s chocolates were a big hit!
A memorable start to what promises to be a fantastic regatta. On to Day 2—go Team NZL!
