North Island Traveller Series 2026/27

The goal of the North Island Traveller series is to connect our North Island clubs and sailors; especially those who sail outside of Auckland.  These events are a great way to experience a wide range of sailing in many different geographical locations throughout the North Island; each offering different sailing conditions to help build a well rounded sailor.  They are also a great way to meet new sailing friends and reconnect with mates throughout the sailing season.

The events are spread around five different locations and yacht clubs in the North Island who all have active Optimist fleets and will include:

No. 1. North Island Optimist Championship and Napier Summer Regatta

from 28th and 29th November 2026 – Napier Sailing Club, Hawkes Bay

No. 2.  Auckland Optimist Championship from 30th January to 1st February 2027

– Maraetai Sailing Club, Auckland

No. 3.  Tauranga Regatta from 27th to 28th February 2027 – Tauranga YPBC, Bay of Plenty

No. 4.  Centreboard Regatta on 13th and 14th March 2027 – Lake Taupo Yacht Club, Central North Island

No. 5. NZIODA Toyota Optimist Nationals from 26th to 30th March 2027, Worser Bay Boating Club, Wellington NB This event is compulsory for those wanting to compete in the North Island Traveller Series.

To be eligible for this series sailors will need to :-

  • be current NZIODA members
  • attend the Toyota Optimist Nationals
  • compete in the Open or White fleet at these events

Trophies will be awarded to the top Male and Female sailors in Open and White fleets for the North Island Traveller Series with certificates for podium finishers.

The NI Traveller Series ranking will use an accumulated points system (a similar approach to Formula One) where competitors will accrue points for their overall standing at the end of each event in the series.

Series placings will be determined by the ranking of each sailor’s total accrued points from each event that they attend in the series – from highest to lowest. Ties will be broken via count back.

The aim of this approach is to: –
> Encourage more people to more events
> Value an overall regatta win appropriately
> Ensure someone can win by winning four events
> Value all events equally across the series

To achieve this, the following points will be awarded at each event for this year’s North Island Traveller series: –
