This event is an important championship for our South Island clubs which rotates around the three active South Island Optimist sailing regions of Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. It is also part of the Oborn’s Nautical South Island traveller series; being sailed alongside a major regatta at the hosting club.
This season the event will be held at Nelson Yacht Club in conjunction with the Nelson / Marlborough regional event over the weekend of 5th and 6th December, 2026.
All three racing fleets are invited to take part in this event, however the number of entries received will determine whether the host club will be able to run separate Open, White and Green fleets as per other significant Optimist regattas throughout the country.
Our Green fleet will experience a variety of race types with individual races being celebrated, while our White and Open fleets both sail more traditional race courses, and are rewarded for their overall series score. It is important that all Optimists taking part in any sailing event are safe to go out on the water so please take the time to check over your boat NOW using the official NZIODA boat safety checklist and get it signed off by a club official so you are good to go for the season.
