Day two of the Zhik Youth Sail NSW saw intense racing with a lot of shifts, predominantly on the left. Our teams initially started on the right hand side, and then they pushed the left side a little bit better. There were massive improvements on the 71-boat start line. It was amazing to see everyone punching that line and pushing that last 30 seconds. A starting line-up of that size is a new experience for most of our skippers. All the Kiwi sailors made steady improvements throughout the day.
It was a scorcher – reaching 29 degrees, and with the wind picking up the race committee decided to go for four races. There were very flushed faces by the time the 18 sailors returned to shore.
Lucas Kandziora (NZL4687) continues to sail a strong regatta with a 6th, an 8th, and a gun (1st)! Holly Robson (NZL4530) and Flora Stevens (NZL4772) and pulled off a 7th in one race each, and Flora also got a 12th. Liam Strack (NZL4763) won a 12th spot in the third race with Phoebe Willis (NZL4629) in 15th. Tom Hall (NZL4684) got a 10th, James Currell (NZL4717) got an 11th, Bailey Robb (NZL4383) 13th, and Luca Blundell (NZL4781) 15th in the last race of the day.
Some of Aussie’s highest ranked opti sailors are here, including their Australia Worlds Team, and their coaches remarked that they can’t believe this is NZIODA’s ‘development’ team.
