Optimists are a one design class. This means that there are strict measurement guidelines for the class to make it fair and equal for all sailors to compete on equal terms. All Optimist hulls used by Open fleet sailors must have a measurement booklet as evidence that they comply with International Optimist regulations. The exception to this is if your Optimist has a sail number prior to NZL 4726, however these boats are still required to have a measurement plaque attached to the hull.
Other related equipment such as spars, foils and sails must also be measured by an approved Optimist measurer and hold the appropriate paperwork as evidence. Open fleet sailors will be required to record the serial numbers on their equipment when they register for NZIODA events and may be required to show the appropriate paperwork to officials at the event as well.
This guide created by NZIODA’s Chief measurer, Bob Witham, is designed to help you locate the individual serial numbers for your Optimist and its equipment.
