Development Teams

This started as a new initiative by NZIODA in approximately 2015.  Since then the GDT has gone from strength to strength.  The aim of this team is to provide some of our top New Zealand female Optimist sailors with an opportunity to race and make friends with other female sailors around New Zealand and further afield.  The team has proven to be one of NZIODA’s success stories allowing female sailors to both gain in skills and form lasting relationships among sailors. There is a high percentage of Girls who have participated in the GDT and then gone on to represent NZ at IODA events.

Currently the team travels annually to Lake Macquarie in Australia for the Youth Sail New South Wales event held in early October each year. 

Indicative cost for travel is around $6,000.00 to $8,000 for the sailor and a parent to attend.

There are some training and group bonding opportunities organised by the coach and team manager between the selection of the team after the Nationals and the event in October.  The team is also expected to attend a team training camp held at Peter Snell Youth Village at the end of May.  The cost of the camp and any training that takes place in New Zealand prior to the the event is NOT included in the above estimate of travel costs.

The aim of this team is to provide some of our up-and-coming male sailors the opportunity to get to know their peers, gain access to high level coaching and experience international competition in a more relaxed way before they may be selected to represent New Zealand at an IODA event.

The aim of this team is to provide some of our older sailors the chance to experience International Travel and form relationships with other keen Opti sailors.  This gives an opportunity to those sailors who may have come to the sport a little later to gain knowledge, experience and enjoyment through international competition.
