The 2020 Toyota Optimist Nationals: A Regatta of two Halves..

Worser Bay certainly lived up to its reputation when it hosted the 2020 Toyota Optimist Nationals.  We had all kinds of weather and from all directions. The only thing that was missing was the sun!! Luckily the Race Officer had it all in hand and made an early decision to run 8 races in the first two days, meaning that when conditions were too windy to sail on Sunday and Monday we were still able to complete a full series to make up a Regatta.

Despite all of the uncertainties this year with Covid, the Nationals still drew a strong fleet with 70 boats sailing in the Open fleet, around 20 in our new White Fleet, and 30 in the Green Fleet.  It is great to see the White Fleet’s numbers building with each NZIODA Regatta.

Worser Bay Nationals 2020

Well done to all the place-getters throughout the three fleets.  But even more importantly, congratulations to all the sailors who took part, from those sailing their very first race in Green Fleet right through to those completing their final Regatta in the class before they move on to their next sailing adventure.  It was wonderful to see so many happy faces coming in off the water each day and many new friendships being forged.

Finally, a huge thank you to all of those who helped out behind the scenes with administration, on-shore duties, and helping out on the water.  With the biggest thanks going to the wonderful team at Worser Bay who certainly made this a regatta to remember.  If you haven’t yet checked out the daily videos, make sure you do so here.  There are also some great action shots of all of the sailors available to purchase on the Worser Bay Website.

We are looking forward to seeing you all again at the Opti Team Cup being held at Lake Pupuke in a couple of weeks time, there is still time to register a team.

And sailors, don’t forget to thank your parents….
