Training Camps

NZIODA North Island Clinic

Traditionally the North Island Clinic is held at Eastern Beach at Willow Park starting on the Monday evening and finishing Friday afternoon with a some racing. The camp is run by KYC, MBSC and WBC in a three year cycle. Sailors stay at the camp for the week with parents pitching in to perform some of the camp duties over the week.

Typically 8 – 10 coaches from around the country work with groups of approximately 6 sailors to go on destination sails, work on technique, practice the haka, organise presentations on nutrition, tactics, strategy and a whole lots more things. In the past we’re worked with Bucklands Beach Yacht Club to take the kids in their J24 sail training boats. So whether it’s the fitness sessions in the morning, movie nights or just spending time for friends from other clubs it’s a great camp for all ages and skill levels to attend.

Held each year in mid January, check out the dates here.

NZIODA South Island Clinic

When run by CBYC it is held at Wainui Camp, the South Island clinic changes location each year between QCYC and CBYC. Held in March check out the dates for the next camp here.

The clinic is a four-day course and will be the premier coaching clinic for Open Optimist Sailors, in the South Island this summer.

Up to 30 spaces are available for financial members of NZIODA. Sailors must be able to Independently rig, launch, and retrieve their own fibreglass Optimist and have some race experience at Open or Green Fleet level at a recent major regatta (e.g. Picton Interislander, Canterbury Age Groups and/or Nationals).
There may be 6 OWNZ charter boats available for those travelling from afar.

The main aim of the clinic is to improve the skills of all participants during the four days of Intensive training and activities. We will have top New Zealand coaches, performing the coaching duties.

The venue when hosted by QCYC is the Mistletoe Bay Eco Village in sunny Onahau Bay on the Northern side of the Queen Charlotte Sound. You can drop your child and their required gear at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in Shelley Bay, Picton where they will be taken to the accommodation and sailing base.
Accommodation is in the lodge facility at the camp. All meals are supplied. The lodge includes a dining room, kitchen, bunk rooms, toilets, showers etc.

WBBC Spring Clinic

The Spring Optimist Clinic was held at Worser Bay Boating Club in 2017 & 2018 and was a great success.

  • The host club would be Worser Bay Boating Club.
  • We propose a three day camp, with sailors to be billeted with Wellington families, including though from other clubs within the Greater Wellington Region (due to the WBBC clubrooms being rebuilt this season)
  • We would expect 25-30 boats to attend, with sailors coming predominantly from Wellington – New Plymouth – Napier and Picton.
  • Sailors will be accepted based on whether they have sailed in a ranking regatta or nationals in open or green fleet.

This clinic caters for sailors who have progressed in the Optimist over last season.

Wellington has had a very successful Optisail live in camp hosted by the Titahi Bay Boating Club for many years which caters for sailor’s fresh out of learn to sail and this clinic offers more advanced coaching.
