All sailors should be registered before 1st October 2025 for the upcoming season to qualify for representing NZ in one of the many teams. Your membership fees are critical to allow NZIODA to administer our class each season.
Please note that selection for IODA teams will NOT be offered to any sailors who are ranked lower than 30 (males) and 40 (females). All sailors chosen for IODA team representation will need to be a New Zealand citizen or hold current permanent residency. Sailors will be chosen based on interest and individual rankings.
All three Development Teams will be chosen from sailors’ rankings AFTER the IODA teams have been finalised.

2 boys and 2 girls
Up to 10 sailors. The IODA regulations regarding gender mix will apply as per below.
If total Number of Sailors in the Team is 5 or 6 there needs to be a minimum number of 1 sailor of each gender.
If total Number of Sailors in the Team is 7 to 9 there needs to be a minimum number of 2 sailors of each gender.
If total Number of Sailors in the Team is 10 there needs to be a minimum number of 3 sailors of each gender.
2 boys and 2 girls. If there are no eligible sailors then places will be offered to the other gender.
There are three Development Teams made up of a maximum of 18 sailors.
These teams are focused on providing an enjoyable first international regatta experience to develop skills and prepare younger sailors to then go on to be members of the New Zealand Optimist Sailing Team (NZOST) in future years.
The Boys Junior Development Team consists of up to 6 male sailors 12 years and younger.
The Girls Development Team consists of up to 6 female sailors and does not have any age limit.
Once the other development teams are filled, the Senior Development Team will be selected. This is made up of a maximum of 6 sailors with the highest ranking aged 13 or older.
All three Development Teams will be chosen from sailor’s ranking at the Nationals.
These teams are selected AFTER the IODA teams are chosen, However, if a sailor qualifies for an IODA team but would prefer to be in a Development Team, they are able to take this option. They can’t be in both.
Sailors can only travel as part of a Development Team once, however if sailors have qualified for a team previously, but have not actually travelled for whatever reason, they can be part of a Development Team if they qualify the following year.
Less sailors may be selected for any team at the discretion of NZIODA.
