Boat Registration

NZIODA have decided to simplify, and reduce the cost to parents with regards to replacement registration, measurement certificates or change of ownership for boats 10 years or older.

If your optimist was registered before 1 January 2014 it no longer needs to have a Registration / Measurement Booklet and you are now NOT required to purchase a new booklet for general regattas or when you are selling / buying an optimist.  This usually applies to boats with sail numbers lower than 4575.

However, if you are competing in Gold Fleet at a Ranking Regatta you will need to obtain a Replacement Book organized through the NZIODA Registrar.

This simplified process only applies to NZL registered Optimists while sailing in New Zealand.

The current NZIODA Registrar is Kathie Elliott at Sail One, 29 Leighton St, Grey Lynn, Auckland if you have any queries or require a copy of the form please contact her at:

To get your equipment certified by a NZIODA approved measurer it will cost you $10 per certificate. Each certificate may contain multiple equipment items e.g. A Foil Certificate includes both Centerboard and Rudder. A Spar certificate includes Mast, Boom and Sprit.

This charge goes to the Measurer to recover a small portion of their costs that include time, travel cost and printing but by no means fully covers their costs so please treat them well!

The international one-design Optimist relies on rules and measurement to maintain the appeal of an even playing field.

You can find the list of the official NZIODA measurers here.
