Day 4 of the Optimist Sailing Camp brought another bright and sunny day, perfect for a full day of sailing. The coaches decided to give the team a well-deserved morning off from fitness activities, allowing everyone to rest and recharge before the day’s racing.
After a quick briefing and packing up our gear, the team enjoyed a hearty breakfast before heading out on the water. The conditions were calm in the morning, and it wasn’t until around 11:30 AM that a steady sea breeze filled in from the northeast, providing the perfect conditions for racing.
The sailors participated in some exciting and competitive races, testing their skills on the water. Afterward, the team enjoyed a lunch break on the water, making the most of the sunny weather and relaxed atmosphere.
In the afternoon, the group returned to shore for the final debrief of the day. The coaches provided valuable feedback on the day’s performance, and everyone packed up their equipment, reflecting on a successful and enjoyable day on the water.
Overall, it was a productive and enjoyable day, with good racing, great weather, and a well-paced schedule that allowed the team to focus on improving their sailing skills.
A huge thank you to Kohimarama Club for all of their support with this clinic and especially to Jo and Andy Stone who led the charge and and gave up four days sleep to lead the camp on sight, despite the fact that they no longer have an Opti sailor – you legends!
Thanks also goes to the parent volunteers who helped throughout the week and to the Optimist Worlds New Zealand Trust (OWNZ) who supported each sailor with a generous subsidy on their registration fee.
