NZIODA are excited to announce the selection of the 2023 travelling team coaches.
Now that New Zealand is back in the international travel scene we have made a commitment to send sailors to the following IODA events: Opti worlds, European Championship, and the Asian and Oceanian Championship. We will also send three development teams to Noumea for the annual ALLIANZ championship. The following coach selections will guide some of the best up and coming Opti sailors as they travel overseas to test themselves against the best in the world.
Our 2023 NZIODA travelling team coaches are: –
Orestes Reyes who is re-joining the programme to coach our Worlds Team made up of the top five ranked sailors. Orestes has had an extremely successful career coaching the 2009 Optimist World Champion and many other successful teams and currently coaches out of Napier Sailing Club.
Wade Tresadern is back and will step up to take our Euros team which is made up of the next ranked two male and two female sailors. Wade has had many successes coaching on the National stage as well as coaching Feva sailors to great success on the international stage.
Andrew Brown and Xanthe Copeland will combine to coach our Asians and Oceanian team this season. This team is made up of our next seven ranked sailors of one gender, and three sailors of the other gender. Andrew has a large resume of coaching successes both in New Zealand and Internationally and Xanthe has proven herself working alongside the Girls development team for NZIODA over the past few years.
In the Development Teams we are lucky to have the services of three very successful and experienced sailors. Olivia Christie rejoins the group to coach the girls development team this year. Olivia took a group to Noumea in 2019 and has a depth of experience sailing lasers and coaching in the Opti fleet. She will be joined by two new faces in the NZIODA coaching team: Blake McGlashan who is one of our most successful youth sailors in recent times winning both the 420 worlds and a gold medal at the youth worlds will be coaching the Senior Development team and Craig Keenan from Royal Akarana Yacht Club who has competed in several Opti international regattas and is currently sailing 49ers.
Sam Mackay will also be involved leading the coaching group and assisting at training clinics where he can.
